Northern Lights Finswimming

Training

Training sessions focus on pool-based training for one hour, and will typically have a focus for each session, which can include sprint or endurance training.

There is also an option for dry training in the gym at the venue thirty minutes prior to pool-based training.  This typically consists of stretching and lifting exercises. Exercises are varied and tailored to individual abilities and paces.

It is not mandatory to attend dry training, but it is helpful in order to really develop in the sport.

During pool training, the following finswimming techniques will be utilised:

  • Bi-fins (BF): Swimming using bi-fins, mask and snorkel using a front crawl stroke.
  • Surface (SF): Swimming using a monofin, mask and snorkel with arms still and streamlined.
  • Apnoea (AP): Underwater swimming with breath held, using a monofin and mask, with arms still and streamlined
  • Immersion (IM): Underwater swimming with compact breathing apparatus, using a monofin and mask, with arms still and streamlined. Note: this technique requires some prior and more formal training with appropriate breathing apparatus.
